About Ratan Tata
- Ratan Naval Tata is an industrialist, philanthropist, and a former chairman of Tata Sons.
- He is a director of several companies and has led several philanthropic organizations.
- Ratan Naval Tata was born on 29 July 1929 at Sion, the suburban town of Mumbai, the son of Lakshmi Ratan Tata and son-in-law of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata.
- He is the younger brother of Cyrus P. Tata.
- He completed his primary education at Bradshwar Mahavidyalaya in Sion, Mumbai and graduated from Bombay University in 1949.
- He received a law degree from the University of London.
- He served in the Judge Advocate General's (JAG) office from 1949 to 1951.
- After graduating, he practised law in England from 1951 to 1953.
- Tata served as a deputy collector in Chandrapur, Maharashtra from 1953 to 1955.
- He then joined the Tata Sons in 1956, where he served as its executive assistant until his appointment as its executive director in 1966.
- He was the chairman of Tata Sons from 1978 to 1980.
- During this time, he successfully sold Bombay Dyeing to DAK group of America for US$260 million.
- He served on the board of directors of Tata Steel from 1984 to 1994.
- In 1995, he retired as the managing director of Tata Sons.
- Since 1996, he has been a non-executive director of various Tata group companies.
- He has served as a trustee of the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani.
- He is the president of The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, established in 1962, which manages Tata Memorial Centre for cancer research in Mumbai.
- He is also the honorary vice-chairman of Tata Trusts.
- In 2013, he set up the "Ratan Tata Tata Global Food The initiative" and is leading the effort to connect to the new public, the private sector, civil society and academic partners needed to address global issues, such as climate change, food security, water and health issues, and inequality.
- He has served as the Chairman of Asia Society, New York.
- He has also been a member of the board of trustees of the Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal.
