Celebrating International Women's Day (IWD) #8march2021

International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on 8 March around the world.[3] It is a focal point in the movement for women's rights.

After the Socialist Party of America organized a Women's Day in New York City on 28 February 1909, German delegates Clara Zetkin, Käte Duncker, Paula Thiede, and others proposed at the 1910 International Socialist Woman's Conference that "a special Women's Day" be organized annually. After women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917, March 8 became a national holiday there. The day was then predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted by the feminist movement in about 1967. The United Nations began celebrating the day in 1977,

and the Women's International Socialist Organization adopted it as an official day of observance in the 1980s.

HISTORY>>>

On 28 February 1909, a group of women in New York City came together to discuss the need to increase the participation of women in society. Inspired by socialist women's efforts to secure the right to vote for women in the United States, the attendees decided that the time was right to demand full equality. Among the attendees were suffragists, socialists, trade unionists, reformers, and radicals. When asked about the proposed date, Clara Zetkin, one of the Women's Day organizers, suggested 8 March as "a day on which women and men, alike in many lands, will have to celebrate the full value and importance of women."

Zetkin and others at the 1909 meeting felt that they could win public support for an international day because most other working-class men were too involved in their industrial jobs to be committed to political work, and those few who were politically active were too focused on the demands of their trades. Zetkin believed that the better way to mobilize men was to fight for women's rights, and that the publicity generated by a day of public celebration would bring men into action.
